In Rio the beach isn't a place you go, it's where the city lives — people work out, meet, eat, watch football and end the day on the sand. The South Zone strings its famous beaches along a few kilometres of coast, and while they run into one another, each has a distinct personality once you know it.

Here's the run from east to west — Copacabana and Leme, then Arpoador, Ipanema and Leblon, and on to the quieter São Conrado and the Vidigal hillside above it — with a note on who each one suits.

Copacabana and Leme.

Copacabana is the grand four-kilometre crescent, backed by its famous black-and-white promenade and a wall of buildings on Avenida Atlântica. It's the busiest, most around-the-clock beach in the city — kiosks, football, volleyball, swimmers — and the stage for the New Year's fireworks. Leme is its calmer northern end, tucked under the hill, with gentler water and a more local feel.

Come here for the spectacle and the energy. It's never empty and never quiet, and that's exactly the point.

Arpoador — the sunset rock.

Between Copacabana and Ipanema, the Arpoador rock juts into the sea, and it is the spot cariocas climb at the end of the day to watch the sun drop behind Dois Irmãos. When the light is good the crowd applauds it — a genuine Rio ritual, not a tourist invention. The little beach beside it is a favourite with surfers.

Wherever you're staying in the South Zone, an evening at Arpoador is worth planning around at least once.

Ipanema and Leblon.

Ipanema has the best sand in the city — a clean, wide beach organised into unofficial sections (the numbered postos) each with its own crowd, from the family end to the lively stretch around Posto 9. Leblon, past the canal, is the same beach with a calmer, more residential feel and a shallow corner (Baixo Bebê) that families with small children gravitate to.

Both are backed by walkable neighbourhoods full of restaurants and cafés, which is why most visitors end up basing themselves here.

São Conrado, Vidigal and beyond.

West of Leblon the coast opens up and quietens. São Conrado is a green, low-key beach under the towering Pedra da Gávea, and it's where the hang-gliders and paragliders launched from Pedra Bonita come in to land on the sand. Above it, the Vidigal hillside looks back over the whole coast. Keep going and you reach the long, open beaches of Barra da Tijuca and the wilder coves beyond.

This end suits travellers who want space and nature over the crowd — and, at Vidigal, a terrace view most beachfront addresses can't match.
