Rio runs on a calendar. The same city that is quiet on a Tuesday in August is at its busiest on the last night of December, and the difference between a smooth trip and a scramble is usually knowing which week you are walking into. We plan this calendar every year for the guests who stay in the homes we manage and for the owners who rent them out, and 2027 is a year with more on it than most.
It opens with Réveillon on Copacabana, runs into a Carnival that starts on February 5, and then brings something Rio has not had since the men's tournament in 2014: a World Cup final at the Maracanã. The FIFA Women's World Cup comes to Brazil from June 24 to July 25, and Rio hosts both the opening match and the final. Around those three anchors sit the Rio Open, a free concert on Copacabana that drew about two million people in May 2026, the Rio Marathon, Web Summit, the book fair, and a run of long holiday weekends.
This guide goes month by month. For each date we say what is confirmed by the organizer and what is expected from the pattern of past years, because a few 2027 programs have not been announced yet. We also say where we would put you to stay, using the homes we manage in Copacabana, Ipanema, São Conrado and Vidigal. Every photograph in it is one of those homes.
How the Rio year works
Rio's year has two halves. The summer half runs from December to March: long beach days, the sea at its warmest, Réveillon, Carnival and the school holidays of most of South America. The winter half runs from June to September: shorter days, cooler evenings and a city that goes back to its own rhythm, with events booked into it on purpose, from the Women's World Cup in 2027 to the book fair in September.
The numbers follow the seasons. Rio de Janeiro state received 2,196,443 foreign tourists in 2025, a record and 43.7% more than in 2024, according to Embratur figures reported by Diário do Rio. February 2026 was the single biggest month on record for foreign arrivals to the state, with 310,654 visitors, followed by January and December. Argentina sends the most visitors by far, then Chile, then the United States, Uruguay and France.
For a guest, this tells you two things. First, the summer months fill first and cost the most, so the earlier you book December to March, the more choice you have. Second, the shoulder months of April, May, August and October to November are when Rio is easiest: the beaches are calmer, restaurants have tables, and the city's own events, like the Rio Marathon or the Festival do Rio, give a trip a center without the crowds of Carnival.
Long holiday weekends
Brazilians plan their year around feriados, the public holidays, and especially around the feriadão, the long weekend a holiday creates when it lands next to a Saturday or a Sunday. In 2027 the long weekends fall on New Year (January 1 to 3), Carnival (February 6 to 10), Easter (March 26 to 28), Tiradentes and São Jorge (April 21 to 25, with a bridge day), Corpus Christi (May 27 to 30), Independence Day (September 4 to 7), Nossa Senhora Aparecida (October 9 to 12), Finados (October 30 to November 2) and the Proclamation of the Republic (November 13 to 15).
Three holidays fall on Saturdays in 2027: Labor Day on May 1, Black Consciousness Day on November 20 and Christmas Day. Those weekends feel like ordinary weekends in Rio. The ones above are the weekends when carioca families head to the mountains in Petrópolis or the coast in Búzios and Paraty, and when visitors from São Paulo come to Rio. Beaches in Zona Sul are busier on those Saturdays and Sundays, and a dinner reservation is worth making a few days ahead.
Expected and announced
A word on how we mark dates. When we say a date is confirmed, the organizer has published it: LIESA for the samba school parades, FIFA for the World Cup, the Rio Open for its tennis week. When we say a date is expected, it is the date the event has kept in recent years, and the 2027 date has not been announced as of October 2026. The Réveillon program, the headliner for the May concert on Copacabana, ArtRio, Rio Gastronomia and the Festival do Rio all fall in that second group. We will update this page as they are announced.

Réveillon on Copacabana
The year starts on the sand. Réveillon, Rio's New Year's Eve, is the largest New Year party in the world by the city's own count. For the night of December 31, 2025, the prefeitura put the crowd at more than 5.1 million people across the 13 stages it set up around the city, with about 2.6 million on Copacabana alone. The fireworks over Copacabana lasted about 12 minutes and were fired from 19 barges anchored along the beach, so the show runs the full length of the bay rather than from one point.
The program for the night of December 31, 2026 into 2027 has not been announced yet. In recent years the city has announced it in early December: the 2025 into 2026 program, with Gilberto Gil, Ney Matogrosso, Alcione, Belo, Iza, Alok and the Beija-Flor samba school on the main stage in front of the Copacabana Palace, was published on December 4, 2025. Expect the same rhythm this year.
How the night runs
Most people dress in white, which is the custom for good luck, and many take flowers to the water's edge for Iemanjá, the goddess of the sea in Afro-Brazilian tradition. The city closes Avenida Atlântica, the beachfront avenue, to cars for the party, so plan to be where you want to be by early evening and to walk from there. The music starts around nightfall on the main stages, the countdown and fireworks are at midnight, and the beach stays full until the early hours.
New Year's Day 2027 falls on a Friday, which makes Thursday, December 31 to Sunday, January 3 one long weekend. Many families who come for Réveillon stay through that weekend, and the beaches on January 1 and 2 are some of the happiest days of the Rio year: everyone is on holiday at once.
Where to watch from
There are three ways to see it. On the sand, with millions of others, which is the experience everyone should have once. From a beachfront terrace or balcony on Avenida Atlântica, which is the way many families and groups choose, because you see the whole bay of fireworks, have your own food and drink and a bathroom, and can walk down to the sand at midnight if you want. Or from a boat on the bay: our concierge team charters speedboats and motor yachts as part of our experiences, and for Réveillon they need to be booked well ahead.
For a terrace on the beach itself, the two homes we would start with are Bali de Janeiro, a penthouse on the Copacabana beachfront with a rooftop pool and garden looking down the beach to Sugarloaf, and the Copacabana Penthouse, a five-suite duplex with its own pool. Write to us early if you would like either of them for Réveillon. Hotels on Copacabana and Leme were 95.59% full for the night of December 31, 2025, according to HotéisRIO, the city's hotel association.
Our full guide to the night, with the custom of the seven waves, transport and safety on the sand, is Réveillon, New Year's Eve in Rio.
January and the start of summer
January is Rio at full summer. Schools across Brazil and most of South America are on holiday, so beach days are long and family-shaped: breakfast on the terrace, the beach from mid-morning, lunch at a kiosk on the sand, a swim before the late-afternoon light. It is the month when the city's rhythm is closest to the picture most visitors have of Rio. Foreign arrivals to Rio state passed 289,000 in January 2026, a 17% rise on January 2025.
Two dates mark the month. Wednesday, January 20 is the day of São Sebastião, the patron saint of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and a municipal holiday. Banks and city offices close; restaurants and shops in Zona Sul mostly stay open. In the morning there is a procession in the center of the city, and in the evening the cathedral is full.
The second date is Saturday, January 16, when Riotur's official street carnival is scheduled to start. The blocos, the street parties that move through neighborhoods behind a band or a sound truck, registered with the city between August 24 and September 24, 2026, and their final permits are issued on January 15, 2027. From the 16th onward, every weekend has blocos, growing in number and size until Carnival itself. In 2026 the official program had about 460 street parades with more than six million people, 98 of them in Zona Sul and 135 in the center of the city.
The blocos for a first-timer
The first blocos, from mid-January, are the best introduction to Rio's carnival for a visitor who is not sure about crowds: smaller, friendlier, mostly in the morning, and often organized by a neighborhood or a group of friends with a theme. Dress light, wear sneakers rather than flip-flops, travel light, with a little cash and your phone in a front pocket, and drink plenty of water. The full schedule is published by Riotur in January; ask us and we will point you to the blocos near your home.
For January, our homes near the beach in Ipanema and Copacabana are the classic choice. If you would rather step away from the summer crowds, the Villa con vista a la playa de São Conrado sits on a hillside above São Conrado with a pool facing the Pedra da Gávea, and the Loft con vistas al mar en Vidigal looks down the whole coast to Ipanema, ten minutes from Leblon.
If this is your first summer in Rio, our guide to the best time to visit Rio compares the months side by side, and the Rio beaches guide explains which beach suits which kind of day.
Carnival 2027
Carnival is Rio's biggest week, and in 2027 it comes early. Easter Sunday is March 28, so Carnival Tuesday falls on February 9. The samba school parades at the Sambódromo, the purpose-built parade avenue on Rua Marquês de Sapucaí designed by Oscar Niemeyer, run over five nights, and the official calendar is already set.
| Night | Fecha | Parade |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | February 5 | Série Ouro, the second division: eight schools from 20:50 |
| Saturday | February 6 | Série Ouro: nine schools |
| Sunday | February 7 | Special Group: União de Maricá, Beija-Flor, Paraíso do Tuiuti, Vila Isabel |
| Monday | February 8 | Special Group: Mocidade, Unidos da Tijuca, Salgueiro, Imperatriz |
| Tuesday | February 9 | Special Group: Portela, Viradouro, Grande Rio, Mangueira |
| Saturday | February 13 | Champions Parade, the top six schools |
The Special Group is the first division: twelve schools, four a night, each parading for over an hour with thousands of members, floats the size of buildings and a samba written for that year. Unidos do Viradouro won in 2026 with 270.0 points, its fourth title, a tenth of a point ahead of Beija-Flor. The judges' scores are usually read on Ash Wednesday, which in 2027 is February 10.
Tickets
Grandstand tickets for the Special Group nights went on sale on Ticketmaster on August 10, 2026, at a fixed R$250 for each parade night in the grandstand sectors and the numbered seats in sector 12, with a limit of four tickets per buyer, according to the Jornal do Brasil report of the launch. Boxes and the front-row tables are sold separately and cost much more. The grandstands are the best value in the Sambódromo. For the parade nights, our concierge team can arrange a private car to the Sambódromo and back.
The street carnival
Most of Rio's carnival happens outside the Sambódromo. The blocos peak from the weekend before Carnival, January 30 and 31, through Carnival Saturday to Tuesday, February 6 to 9, with another weekend of parties after it. Some draw a few hundred people on a residential street in Laranjeiras; others, like Cordão da Bola Preta in the city center, have drawn crowds in the hundreds of thousands. The official program is published in January.
How busy it gets
Very. Hotel occupancy across the city was 99.02% over Carnival 2026, with Ipanema and Leblon at 99.75% and Copacabana and Leme at 99.46%, according to HotéisRIO. Embratur counted about 110,000 foreign visitors in Rio over the Carnival period, 9% more than in 2025. For a home with space for a family or a group, the time to book is now, while there is still a choice. Write to us with your dates and we will tell you which homes are open.
Where to stay depends on how you want to live the week. Ipanema and Leblon are the center of the Zona Sul blocos and an easy taxi to the Sambódromo on parade nights. Of the beach neighborhoods, Copacabana is the shortest ride to the Sambódromo, and it has the biggest beach parties. São Conrado, Joá and Vidigal let you step out of the party and come back to a quiet house with a pool. Our Carnival in Rio guide covers the parades, the blocos and what to wear in detail.

The Rio Open at the Jockey Club
The Rio Open, South America's only ATP 500 tournament, runs from Saturday, February 13 to Sunday, February 21, 2027, at the Jockey Club Brasileiro in Gávea, the racecourse on the edge of the Lagoa between Leblon and the Jardim Botânico. It opens on the same day as Carnival's Champions Parade, so the second weekend of February in 2027 gives Zona Sul two of its biggest events on one Saturday.
The tournament is growing for 2027. Its site at the Jockey Club expands from about 40,000 square meters to 67,000 square meters in the area known as the Pião do Prado, with capacity up by about half and a center court of 9,500 seats, according to the organizers' announcements reported by Diário do Rio. The 2026 edition drew about 70,000 people over its nine days. The first confirmed player for 2027 is Flavio Cobolli. Tickets went on general sale on Eventim on October 13, 2026, after a pre-sale the week before.
Getting to the Jockey Club
The appeal of the Rio Open for a visitor is that it sits inside the city. From most of Leblon you can walk to the Jockey Club in fifteen or twenty minutes along the Lagoa; from Ipanema it is a short taxi. Day sessions on the outside courts in the first days of the tournament are the easiest way in, with the chance to watch the top players practice; the night sessions on center court, with the Christ the Redeemer statue lit on Corcovado above the stands, are the ones people remember.
For a week that combines the end of Carnival with the tennis, Leblon and Ipanema are the natural base, and so is Vidigal, which sits on the hill at the end of Leblon beach. The Loft con vistas al mar en Vidigal looks straight down the coast over Leblon and Ipanema, and is a short drive from the Jockey Club. Our neighborhood guides for Leblon y Gávea explain the streets around the Lagoa.
A practical note for the Carnival and tennis weeks together: restaurants in Leblon and around the Lagoa are full on those nights, and the best tables are booked days ahead. Tell us your dates and we will suggest where to book before you arrive.
Easter and the April holidays
After February, the city exhales. March is still summer, with warm sea and long afternoons, but the crowds of Carnival have gone home, and Easter in 2027 comes late in the month: Good Friday is March 26 and Easter Sunday March 28. Easter weekend is a family weekend in Rio, with church services across the city and a lot of chocolate, and the beaches of Zona Sul are lively without being packed.
April is a month of meetings. Rio hosts the third UN Ocean Decade Conference in the week of April 5 to 9, 2027, co-organized by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission and the government of Brazil, with the main conference from April 7 to 9. The week after, LAAD Defence and Security, Latin America's largest defense and security trade fair, runs from April 13 to 16 at Riocentro in Barra da Tijuca. Rio Fashion Week, presented by the city, returns for its second edition in mid-April; the 2026 edition ran from April 14 to 18 at Píer Mauá with 20 shows.
Tiradentes and São Jorge
The month ends with two holidays three days apart. Tiradentes, the national holiday for the hero of Brazil's independence movement, falls on Wednesday, April 21, and São Jorge, a Rio state holiday for Saint George, falls on Friday, April 23. Many cariocas take Thursday as a bridge day, which turns April 21 to 25 into a five-day break. Saint George's day is a real celebration in Rio, with dawn masses, fireworks and feijoada in the north of the city, and it is one of the most carioca days of the year to be in town.
A good month for business travel
For visitors coming for the conferences, April is a pleasant month to work from Rio. The sea is still warm, the light is softer than in summer, and a home with a good desk and a fast connection makes a longer stay comfortable. For a team, a villa like the Villa con vista a la playa de São Conrado, with its open-air living area beside the pool, works as a place to meet and a place to rest. Riocentro, where LAAD runs, is in Barra da Tijuca, about 30 to 40 minutes from São Conrado outside rush hour, and further from Ipanema and Copacabana, so plan your transport if you are there every day.
The Brazil cruise season also ends in April. The 2026 to 2027 season runs to April 9, with 125 ship calls planned for Rio and more than 316,000 berths, according to a CLIA Brasil survey released with the Ministry of Tourism. On cruise days the center of the city around Píer Mauá, the Museu do Amanhã and the Boulevard Olímpico is busier; Zona Sul feels little of it.
The free concert on Copacabana in May
For three years running, Rio has staged one of the largest concerts in the world on Copacabana beach, free, on a Saturday night in early May. Madonna played to 1.6 million people in May 2024. Lady Gaga drew 2.1 million in May 2025. Shakira played on Saturday, May 2, 2026 to about two million, all according to Riotur's counts. The series, which the city calls Todo Mundo no Rio, is guaranteed until at least 2028, the city and Riotur said around the Shakira show.
The 2027 headliner and date have not been announced as of October 2026. All three editions fell on a weekend in early May, and the press expects the same in 2027, which would put it around Saturday, May 1 or Saturday, May 8. Labor Day falls on Saturday, May 1 in 2027, so the first weekend of May will be busy in Rio either way.
What the week feels like
The concert changes Copacabana for a week. The stage is built on the sand in front of the Copacabana Palace in the days before, the avenue is closed on the night, and the crowd stretches from Leme toward the Forte de Copacabana. Embratur reported a 41% rise in international air tickets to Rio for the week of Lady Gaga's show compared with Madonna's the year before. It is a younger, more international crowd than Réveillon, and the atmosphere in the days around it is closer to a festival than a holiday.
If you want to be part of it, the beachfront is the place: a terrace on Avenida Atlântica turns the show into an evening at home with a stage in front of it, and the sand is a two-minute walk away. If you would rather enjoy May in Rio without the crowd, it is a good week to be in São Conrado or Vidigal, or to take a day boat to the islands of the Costa Verde, one of the experiences our concierge arranges.
Outside that weekend, May is one of the loveliest months in Rio. The heat of summer has passed, the days are clear and warm, the evenings are cool enough for a light sweater by the water, and the city is full of its own people rather than visitors. For a first trip with time to see the city, our three days in Rio itinerary is a good start.
Corpus Christi and the Rio Marathon
The Maratona do Rio, the Rio Marathon, holds its 25th edition from Thursday, May 27 to Sunday, May 30, 2027, over the Corpus Christi holiday. The races are spread over four days: a 5K on Thursday, a 10K on Friday, the half marathon on Saturday and the full marathon on Sunday. The 2026 edition had about 70,000 runners from 59 countries.
Corpus Christi became a public holiday in Rio de Janeiro state in 2025; nationally it is only an optional day off. In 2027 it falls on Thursday, May 27, so many cariocas will take Friday as well, and the city will have a four-day weekend with tens of thousands of runners and their families in town.
Running the race
The marathon route runs along the coast toward the center of the city, and the half marathon is one of the most beautiful in the world, following the beaches of Zona Sul. Registration for the half marathon opens by lottery on November 9, 2026. If you are coming to run, a home near the beach in Ipanema or Copacabana makes the early starts easier, and a kitchen of your own makes the pasta dinner on Saturday simple. Runners often stay a week: a few days before to get used to the humidity, and a few after to enjoy the city on tired legs.
A busy weekend for the city
The race weekend and the holiday together fill Zona Sul. Over the same weekend in 2024, HotéisRIO reported occupancy of 89.15% in Copacabana and Leme and 81.47% in Ipanema and Leblon, before Corpus Christi was a state holiday. Expect 2027 to be busier. Roads along the beaches close early on race mornings, so plan any airport transfer for the afternoon.
For a runner's base, the Penthouse lineal frente a la playa de Ipanema sits directly on the beach, with four bedrooms for a group running together and a long terrace for the morning after. For couples, the Penthouse de dos suites en Ipanema is a few blocks back from the sand, with a plunge pool on the terrace for tired legs.
Web Summit Rio in June
Web Summit Rio, the Latin American edition of the Lisbon conference, runs from Monday, June 14 to Thursday, June 17, 2027 at Riocentro in Barra da Tijuca. A five-year agreement signed through Invest.Rio keeps the event in Rio until 2030, and past editions have drawn more than 40,000 participants.
Web Summit week has become one of the busiest business weeks of the Rio year. Founders, investors and speakers fill the restaurants of Leblon and Ipanema in the evenings, and side events run across the city. Riocentro itself is in the West Zone, so the practical question for visitors is where to stay: close to the venue in Barra, or in Zona Sul with a longer daily drive and a better evening.
Zona Sul or Barra
Many visitors who come for Web Summit choose Zona Sul and accept the drive, because the evenings matter as much as the days. São Conrado and Joá are the compromise: they sit between the two, on the coast road that leads to Barra, so the morning drive is shorter, and the evening drive back to Leblon for dinner is ten minutes. A villa with space for a team, a long table and a pool is also a place to host your own dinner during the week.
El Loft con vistas al mar en Vidigal is a good choice for one or two people coming for the conference: bright, quiet, with a desk by the window and the view down the coast, and close to the tunnel that leads toward Barra. For a team, the Villa con vista a la playa de São Conrado has the space.
June also brings the Festa Junina season, the winter harvest festivals of the northeast of Brazil, with bonfires, square dances, corn cakes and quentão, a hot spiced drink. Every neighborhood and school in Rio has one in June or July, and the large ones in the city are open to everyone. A Festa Junina is one of the best ways to see a side of Brazil that visitors in summer never meet.
The Women's World Cup at the Maracanã
The event of the year is the FIFA Women's World Cup. Brazil hosts the tournament from Thursday, June 24 to Sunday, July 25, 2027: 32 teams and 64 matches in eight host cities, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Recife and Salvador. It is the first Women's World Cup held in South America.
Rio has the biggest nights. The Maracanã hosts the opening match, with Brazil playing on Thursday, June 24, and the final on Sunday, July 25. Between them, the stadium has seven more matches: group matches on June 26, June 30, July 3, July 5 and July 7, a quarter-final on Friday, July 16 and a semi-final on Wednesday, July 21. Nine matches in all, according to the FIFA schedule published in August 2026.
The draw, the tickets and the fan festival
The Final Draw takes place on Friday, December 11, 2026, at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio, the MAM, on the Aterro do Flamengo. That is when fans will learn which teams play in Rio in the group stage, and when kick-off times are set. Ticket phases and prices had not been announced in October 2026; FIFA invited fans to register their interest at FIFA.com/tickets, and more than 800,000 had done so by August. FIFA has confirmed FIFA Fan Festivals in Rio and across the country, but has not yet named the Rio site.
The tournament matters beyond the stadium. A study by FGV for Embratur estimated R$8.8 billion in economic activity and 73,700 jobs across Brazil. For Rio, the knockout weeks in July overlap the Brazilian school holidays, which in recent years have fallen in the second half of July. The weeks of the quarter-final, semi-final and final will be the busiest of the Rio winter.
Getting to the Maracanã
The Maracanã is in the North Zone, near the center of the city, and has its own metro station. On match days the metro is the usual way in from Zona Sul and the simplest way home afterwards; our team can also arrange a driver to drop you near the stadium and meet you after the match at an agreed point. Allow time: on big nights the crowds around the stadium move slowly.
Where to stay for the World Cup
For a family or a group following a team, a home with space for everyone and a place to watch the other matches together is worth more than a hotel corridor. The Penthouse lineal frente a la playa de Ipanema sleeps a family on the beach, with a big living room for match days. The Villa con vista a la playa de São Conrado is a house for a group, with a pool and an outdoor living area for long afternoons between matches. If you hope to see the final, reserve your home now: FIFA has not opened ticket sales yet, and the last two weeks of July will be among the busiest of the Rio winter.
July and August in Rio
Rio's winter is a mild one. Days are warm enough for the beach on most afternoons, evenings are fresh, and the air is drier than in summer, so the views from the hills are often at their sharpest. It is the season when the city's walks and viewpoints are most comfortable: the trail up Pedra do Telégrafo, the climb to the top of Dois Irmãos from Vidigal, the Parque Lage gardens below Corcovado, and the long walk along the beaches from Leme to Leblon.
July in 2027 is World Cup month, and Rio will be busy through the knockout matches. August is the opposite: the quietest month of the Rio year for visitors, and in many ways the most relaxed. Restaurants that are impossible to book in February have tables on a Thursday night. The beaches are local. Rates for homes are at their lowest, and minimum stays are shorter.
A month for a longer stay
August is the month we suggest to guests who want to know Rio rather than visit it: three or four weeks in one home, a routine of beach, market, gym and dinner, and time to explore the city one neighborhood at a time. It is also the month many of our owners choose to come and use their own homes, because the city is at its calmest.
Think about the house as much as the location in winter. A heated or sun-warmed pool, a terrace that takes the afternoon sun, a fireplace in the mountains if you head up to Petrópolis for a weekend: these matter more than a beachfront address. The Villa con vista a la playa de São Conrado, with its pool facing the sea and the Pedra da Gávea, is a house made for August, and the Loft con vistas al mar en Vidigal catches the afternoon light over Ipanema.
Our neighborhood pages for São Conrado, Vidigal y Joá describe the quieter side of the coast, and our photo essay on Joá and São Conrado shows why so many of our longer-stay guests end up there.
Books, art and food in September
September brings the city's cultural season. The Bienal do Livro, Rio's book fair and one of the largest in Latin America, holds its 23rd edition from Friday, September 3 to Sunday, September 12, 2027. The venue had not been announced in October 2026; the 2025 edition drew more than 740,000 visitors at Riocentro, a record. In the middle of it, Independence Day falls on Tuesday, September 7, and many cariocas take Monday the 6th off, making September 4 to 7 a long weekend.
ArtRio, the city's contemporary art fair, has kept a mid-to-late September slot at the Marina da Glória: the 2026 edition ran from September 16 to 20 with 78 galleries. Rio Gastronomia, the food festival, ran from September 17 to October 4, 2026 at the Jockey Club in Gávea, on Thursday to Sunday weekends. Both are expected in similar weeks in 2027, with dates to be announced.
Rock in Rio returns in 2028
Visitors often ask about Rock in Rio, which filled the Parque Olímpico in Barra over seven days in September 2026 with more than 700,000 people from 89 countries. The festival runs every other year in Rio, and the organizers have confirmed the next edition for September 2028. In 2027 the festival family's event is The Town, in São Paulo, on September 4 to 6 and 11 to 12. If you are flying in for The Town, a few days in Rio before or after are a short flight away.
September in Rio
September is the start of spring in Rio, and the weather turns warmer week by week. It is a fine month for a visit built around food and culture: the museums in the center, the galleries of Gávea and Leblon, the city's restaurants, and an evening at the Theatro Municipal. Our restaurant guide y museum guide are good places to start, and our concierge team books tables and private visits.
For an art week, Leblon and Ipanema are the natural bases, close to the galleries and the restaurants. For a group, the Joá and São Conrado houses give you a garden and a pool to come back to after a day in the city.
October and November holidays
The last quarter of the year brings three long weekends and the return of summer. Nossa Senhora Aparecida, the patron saint of Brazil, is honored on Tuesday, October 12, which is also Children's Day in Brazil; with Monday the 11th as a bridge, October 9 to 12 is a four-day weekend. Finados, All Souls' Day, falls on Tuesday, November 2, and the Proclamation of the Republic on Monday, November 15. Black Consciousness Day, a national holiday since 2024 and a long-standing Rio state holiday, falls on Saturday, November 20 in 2027.
October is also the month of the Festival do Rio, the city's international film festival. Its 28th edition ran from October 1 to 11, 2026, with about 350 films; the 2027 dates had not been announced in October 2026, and the festival has kept an early October slot in recent years. Screenings run across the city's cinemas, including the old street cinemas of Botafogo and the center.
The cruise season and the start of summer
The Brazil cruise season begins again in late October, and by November the beaches are filling with the first summer visitors from Argentina and Europe. The sea warms, the evenings get longer, and the restaurants open their terraces. For many of our guests, November is the best month of all: the summer weather has arrived, the summer prices and crowds have not.
It is also the moment to book the coming summer. By November, the large homes for Réveillon 2027 into 2028 and Carnival 2028 are being reserved. If you know your dates, write to us in October and we will send you what is open.
For a November week, any of our beach homes works well; for a family holiday over one of the long weekends, the Villa con vista a la playa de São Conrado y el Bali de Janeiro penthouse give everyone room, and both have pools.
When to book your dates
The question we are asked most about the Rio calendar is how far ahead to book. The answer depends on the week, and on the size of the home. Hotels and small apartments come and go until the last minute; large homes with four or more bedrooms, a pool and a view do not, because there are few of them and the same families return to them every year.

Minimum stays and the event weeks
For Réveillon and Carnival, our larger homes usually have a minimum stay, and we confirm it with your quote. It is easy to plan around: a Réveillon trip often runs from December 28 to January 3, and a Carnival trip from Friday to Ash Wednesday. Expect the same around the World Cup match weekends.
Where to stay for each event
As a rule of thumb: for Réveillon and the May concert, Copacabana, on the beachfront. For Carnival, Ipanema and Leblon for the street parties, Copacabana for the Sambódromo nights. For the Rio Open, Leblon, Ipanema and Vidigal, close to the Jockey Club. For Web Summit, São Conrado and Joá, between Riocentro and Zona Sul. For the World Cup, anywhere in Zona Sul with good access to the metro, or a villa with room for your group. Our where to stay in Rio guide compares the neighborhoods in more depth.
Every home in this guide is one we manage ourselves, with our own team in Rio for check-in, housekeeping and anything you need during your stay.
