Rio is a year-round city, but the season you pick decides the price, the crowd and the mood. Here's the honest calendar.

The best time to visit Rio de Janeiro.

Rio sits in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons run opposite to Europe and North America: summer is December to March, winter is June to August. It's warm all year — the city never really gets cold — so the real question isn't temperature, it's how busy and how expensive you want the trip to be.

The big picture: December to March is hot, lively and pricey, bookended by the two enormous dates of the calendar, Réveillon and Carnival. April–May and September–November are the shoulder — warm, calmer and the best value. June to August is mild, dry and the easiest time to move around the city.

Summer: December to March.

This is Rio at full volume — long hot days, the beaches packed, the sea warm, and the city out on the sand from morning to night. It's the most beautiful time to be here and the most expensive: rates run well above the rest of the year, minimum stays lengthen around the holidays, and the best homes go months in advance. Afternoon downpours are common and usually brief.

If summer is when you can come, come — just book early and expect company on the beach. The two peak dates inside it, New Year and Carnival, are their own planning problem, covered below.

The shoulder: April–May and September–November.

If you want our honest recommendation for a first visit, it's the shoulder. The weather is still warm and beach-worthy, the crowds thin out, and rates settle back to their most reasonable. You get the same city without the peak-season premium or the holiday scramble, and popular restaurants and sights are far easier to walk into.

May and September–October in particular tend to hit the sweet spot: warm water, long clear stretches, and a calmer pace across the South Zone.

Winter: June to August.

Rio's winter is mild and dry rather than cold — plenty of clear, comfortable days in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, cooler evenings, and the calmest, easiest version of the city to explore. The sea is cooler and the beach crowd thinner, but the sightseeing — Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, the Tijuca forest, the museums — is at its most pleasant, with the clearest views up top.

It's the best window if your trip is more about the city and the hikes than about lying on the sand, and prices are gentle outside the July school holidays.

The two dates that change everything.

Two nights dominate the Rio calendar. Réveillon, New Year's Eve on Copacabana beach, is the largest New Year's celebration in the world — well over two million people in white, and fireworks fired off barges the length of the beach. Carnaval follows in February or early March, its date set by the church calendar, and takes over the whole city for a week of street parties and the Sambódromo parades.

For either, the normal rules don't apply: book the earliest of any date, expect longer minimum stays and premium rates, and plan the trip around the event rather than the other way round. Each has its own guide below.

What is the best month to visit Rio de Janeiro?

For the best balance of warm weather, thinner crowds and reasonable prices, aim for the shoulder months — April–May or September–November. Summer (December–March) is the most beautiful and the most expensive; winter (June–August) is mild, dry and easiest for sightseeing.

Is Rio de Janeiro warm all year round?

Yes. Rio is warm year-round — summer is hot and humid, winter is mild rather than cold, typically in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius by day. There's no season you'd call cold, which is why the beaches stay in use all year.

When is the rainy season in Rio?

Should I visit Rio during Carnival or New Year's?

They're spectacular but they're the busiest, priciest and earliest-selling dates of the year, with longer minimum stays. If you want the event, plan the whole trip around it and book months ahead. If you want the city calm and affordable, avoid both and come in the shoulder.
