Three days in Rio de Janeiro.

Three days is enough to see the two great icons, spend real time on the beach, and get a feel for Rio's older, hillier heart — as long as you don't try to cram all of it into one morning. This is the pace we'd suggest to a first-time visitor: one big sight a day, anchored around the beach the trip is really for.

It assumes you're based in the South Zone, which keeps everything close. Swap the order to follow the clearest weather — you want a clear day for Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, so watch the forecast and be flexible.

Day 1 — Christ the Redeemer, then the beach.

Start with the icon. Christ the Redeemer stands atop Corcovado, reached by the cog train up through the Tijuca forest or by official van — go early for the clearest air and the smallest crowds, and buy timed tickets ahead. The view from the feet of the statue takes in the whole city, the bay and Sugarloaf.

Come down and give the afternoon to the beach — walk Ipanema, swim, and end the day on the Arpoador rock for the sunset, which the crowd applauds when it's good. Dinner in Ipanema or Leblon, close to home.

Day 2 — Sugarloaf and the bay.

The second great view is from Sugarloaf (Pão de Açúcar). A two-stage cable car climbs from Urca to the Morro da Urca and then to the summit, with the whole coastline, the bay and Christ the Redeemer laid out across from you — best in the late afternoon as the light softens. The quiet Urca neighbourhood at its foot is a lovely, low-key place for a drink by the water afterwards.

With a morning free beforehand, spend it on the beach or beside the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, the lagoon ringed by a walking-and-cycling path just inland from Ipanema.

Day 3 — old Rio: Santa Teresa, Lapa and the forest.

Give the last day to the older, hillier city. Santa Teresa is a hilltop neighbourhood of cobbled lanes, artists' studios and colonial houses, reached by its restored tram; below it, Lapa is known for its white aqueduct arches and its nightlife. Nearby, the Escadaria Selarón — the tiled staircase — is worth the short walk.

If you'd rather be in nature, the Tijuca forest — one of the largest urban forests in the world — has waterfalls and trails minutes from the city, and Parque Lage, at the foot of Corcovado, is a beautiful, free garden and café to end on.

If you have a fourth day.

A fourth day opens up a trip out of the city. A boat day among the islands, a drive to the colonial coast, or a run up to the mountain towns of Petrópolis or Teresópolis are all within reach, and our concierge can set any of them up.
