Ipanema is the address most people picture when they picture Rio: a straight kilometre and a half of beach that runs from the rocks at Arpoador down to the Jardim de Alah canal, with Leblon on the far side and the two peaks of Dois Irmãos closing the view. The blocks behind it are calm and walkable — Visconde de Pirajá for shopping, the Saturday hippie fair at Praça General Osório, and Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas ten minutes inland.
