Réveillon is Rio's New Year's Eve, and it is the largest New Year's celebration in the world. Well over two million people, most of them dressed in white, pack onto Copacabana beach for a fireworks display fired off barges the length of Avenida Atlântica. It is the single most in-demand night of the Rio calendar, and it's a genuine spectacle rather than a tourist-only affair — the whole city turns out for it.

What actually happens.

The centre of it all is Copacabana. Through the evening the beach fills, stages along the sand run live music, and at midnight the fireworks go up from a line of barges moored offshore — several minutes of it, seen at eye level from the beach and the front-row buildings. The crowd is enormous but famously good-natured; families come, not just the young.

Other beaches hold their own smaller displays, but Copacabana is the main event, and the closer to the water you are, the better the show.

The traditions worth knowing.

A few carry real meaning. People wear white for peace and luck into the new year — it's near-universal, so pack a white outfit. Many bring flowers and small offerings to set on the water for Iemanjá, the sea goddess of Afro-Brazilian faith, a custom with deep roots in Brazilian culture. And at midnight tradition says to jump seven waves, making a wish on each.

None of it is compulsory, but joining in — white clothes, a wish on the waves — is part of what makes the night feel like Rio's rather than a generic countdown.

Where to watch from.

The fireworks are fired along Copacabana, so a front-row building on Avenida Atlântica gets the full display over the water without fighting the crowd on the sand. That's the premium seat, and it's why the beachfront apartments sell out first. If you'd rather be near the party than in it, a home a short drive away in Ipanema or above São Conrado gives you room to host and an easy exit.

Whatever you choose, plan how you'll get around: streets close, transport is limited, and walking is often the fastest way in and out on the night itself.

How to plan it.

Three things. Timing: this is the earliest-selling date of the Rio year, so the best homes are gone months out — enquire as far ahead as you can. Minimum stays: over the New Year window they lengthen, usually to several nights rather than one or two. Rates: they run well above the normal calendar. It's a night worth doing properly, and doing properly means booking early.
