Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro.

Almost everyone who visits Rio for the first time stays in the Zona Sul — the South Zone, the strip of coast where Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon sit shoulder to shoulder along the Atlantic. It is the safest, most walkable, most connected part of the city for a visitor, and it is where the beaches, the restaurants and the postcard views actually are. The question is rarely which city — it's which few blocks.

The short version: Ipanema for a first trip, Copacabana for the grand beachfront and the nightlife, Leblon for calm and good food, and the Vidigal hillside for the best view per dollar in Rio. Below we walk through each, then point you at the homes we rent in them.

Ipanema — the one we recommend most.

Ipanema is the address most people picture when they picture Rio: a kilometre and a half of the best sand in the city, running from the rocks at Arpoador down to the Jardim de Alah canal, with the two peaks of Dois Irmãos closing the view. The blocks behind the beach are a calm, walkable grid — Rua Visconde de Pirajá for shopping, the Saturday hippie fair at Praça General Osório, and the Lagoa ten minutes inland.

What makes it the default first-trip pick is that you can live without a car. The beach, the restaurants on Farme de Amoedo, the metro at General Osório and the Lagoa are all inside a ten-minute walk. If you only read one recommendation on this page, it's this one.

Copacabana — the grand crescent.

Copacabana is the older, grander beachfront — a four-kilometre curve under the black-and-white wave pattern of its promenade, with Sugarloaf at the Leme end and the fort at Posto 6. It is denser and more around-the-clock than Ipanema, with more hotels, more late-night life, and the biggest New Year's celebration on earth on its sand every 31 December.

Stay here if you want the full beachfront spectacle and don't mind the bustle. A front-row apartment on Avenida Atlântica puts the promenade and the water under your windows; a block or two back is quieter and better value, with the sand still a two-minute walk.

Leblon — quiet, and where cariocas eat.

Leblon is Ipanema's quieter continuation past the canal — the same beach, a calmer crowd, and the neighbourhood locals will tell you has the best restaurants in the Zona Sul. It's residential and green, with the Lagoa on one side and the beach on the other, and it tends to be the most expensive square metre in the city.

Choose Leblon if your idea of a good trip is long lunches, easy beach mornings and an early, unhurried pace. It's a short walk or a five-minute ride from everything Ipanema has, with less of the crowd.

Vidigal — the view most beachfront can't buy.

Vidigal climbs the hillside between Leblon and São Conrado, at the foot of the trail up Dois Irmãos — the two-peaked summit that gives the most photographed view in the city. Homes here look straight down the coast over Leblon and the open ocean, from a vantage the flat neighbourhoods below simply don't have, and for a fraction of a beachfront price.

The trade is a steep approach — stairs, narrow lanes, a short car or motorbike leg to the door — so it suits travellers who want character and a terrace over the sea rather than a lobby and a doorman. If that's you, it's some of the best value in Rio.
